Bob is chief research strategist for Russell Investments’ Americas Institutional business. He is responsible for the strategic advice delivered to the various parts of Russell Investments’ institutional client base, working with the manager research team, product groups and other research efforts across Russell Investments. Bob joined the firm in 1994 as a consultant in the U.K., and has worked in the U.S. since 2002. He previously worked for William M. Mercer’s actuarial and investment practices.
Bob co-authored, with former colleagues Don Ezra and Matt X. Smith, The Retirement Plan Solution: The Reinvention of Defined Contribution, published by Wiley Finance. This book sets out a vision for the improvement of the DC system, addressing inefficiencies and opportunities that exist both before and after retirement.
Bob is also the author of a long list of wide-ranging research papers on topics large and small. These include Russell Investments’ Corporate Pension Finance Handbook, the $20 Billion Club (which follows the progress of the largest corporate pension plans in America), Liability-Responsive Asset Allocation, Perspectives on risk management, the T standard (a standardized method for the calculation of portfolio performance during a transition), and The future of retirement: three big ideas that could reshape the U.S. retirement system. He has also written on subjects as diverse as global equity indices, the use of options, foreign exchange trading, responsible investment, investment committee effectiveness, hedge funds, behavioral finance, pension plan hibernation, volatility-response asset allocation, defensive equity, mark-to-market pension cost accounting and many more.
Bob was recognized as one of the most influential consultants in the institutional investment universe in Chief Investment Officer (CIO)’s 2015 “The Knowledge Brokers” series.”
